We are constantly being bombarded by adverts. We switch on the TV and there are ads, we go on Facebook and there are ads, we go on YouTube and sure enough there are ads. The majority of the time we barely pay attention to the ads and try to skip through them as soon as that ‘skip ad’ button pops up. But and here’s that but, not always! There are some ads, that for some reason or another attract our attention. Those ads that make it past the ‘skip ad’ button. So, what is so special about these ads?
Well, the key in these adverts is emotion. Marketers have long evaluated the effects that ads have on our emotions and how in turn this influences our buying behaviour. In fact, I remember every Christmas I spent in the Uk, the whole family would wait to see the John Lewis advert for that year. It would be a conversation starter any time the commercials came on. We would all ask each other if we had seen the ad yet which is pretty usual considering most of them we would all pull out our phones when the show would cut for commercials. So what was it about these commercials? These shorts little adverts pulled on heartstrings and thus were very memorable. Memorable adverts play on our emotions whether they make us sad, laugh, or happy. This is an important factor to consider when coming up with content ideas for videos. You may not have a lot of time in your video (depending on where it will be uploaded) but remember that it needs to stand out. Keep in mind that sometimes you’ll have 5 seconds to attract your viewer and interest them enough to keep watching without pressing that ‘skip ad’ button.
